A thin decorative finish follows whatever its substrate does, so the first job is to establish whether the surface underneath is stable enough, and the second is to manage moisture and curing on site.

Flexible and timber substrates
- Timber floors and framed structures can deflect and move. Their stiffness and suitability must be assessed by a qualified person before any microcement goes over them.
- Mesh follows the real substrate and condition. It helps where reinforcement is required but does not correct a structure that moves too much, and it does not replace movement joints.
- Where the substrate is not suitable, stop and correct it. Do not rely on a thicker build or extra coats.
Humidity and curing
- High humidity slows drying. Do not start the next stage until the substrate and the preceding coat meet the cure and moisture requirements in the system guide.
- Check residual moisture in screeds and renders before priming. Moisture problems underneath can show through the finish later.
- Ventilation and site protection should be planned with the builder for the full cycle, including after the last protective coat.
